Teenagers hate to read. When I returned to the classroom three years ago, I was confronted with this amazing revelation. My goal as an English teacher is to encourage students to read and enjoy reading. During the first term, my students were supposed to read several novels. Many students didn’t read the novels, but listened to the classroom discussion. And those who actually read them did so only because I required the reading.
Then I introduced C. J. Henderson to them, handed them a copy of The Cabin, and they read! Not only did they read the nightly assignment, most of them finished the book within a couple of days. My students thoroughly enjoyed the novel, loved to discuss the situations occurring in the novel, and asked for more—Cabin II. What an accomplishment!
Thank you, C. J., for providing a starting point for my students to love to read.
